The Closed Door

If I were alone

I would like not to be

But I might enjoy some quiet

By the upset, rocking sea.

I would like to have my family

And a glass of ice-cold tea

But who I need the most

Already lives inside of me.

I am never alone

I have all that I need

       Jesus is my all

He has set me free

But if I had to pick one

       just one inanimate thing

       I would pick a guitar

with six metal strings.

I would write endless poems

As my hands grew calloused more

       And then I would remember

The life I had before.
