Closer to It

I paused,

Then moved closer to an old oak.

I was twelve years old.

Another step,

Morning sun

Saw to flaring arms.

I was fourteen.

Fourth step,

Time froze all,

An endless void.

I was fifteen.

Fifth step,

Bitter ice melted.

The sun setted,

And branches trembled.

I was sixteen.

Sixth step,

Storms raged

And paths disintegrated.

Nigh tall,

I sunk into blindness.

I was seventeen.

Seventh step,

Slow going.

Fortunate appendages survived,

Anticipating sunrise

And my sight renewed.

I am to be eighteen years old.
