Clouds of Fire

When I was younger
and saw golden sunlight through the clouds,
I used to think it was a gateway to heaven.

Back then I thought
It was how angels came to the Earth
To do what they needed to do.

Now I wish it were true.
That it was a gateway
But to give visiting hours to those of us still here.

I'd come visit
Three times a week
Probably more like once a day.

I wouldn't ask about the future
Or even about the past
I'd just be there with you.

But maybe I'd start
To take that time for granted
And forget the healing process.

Or maybe I'd forget
To appreciate a sky
That looks like heaven's inviting me in.

So now I look at sunsets
Over corn and soybean fields
Wondering about the sky behind the pearly gates

Younger me still looks
For the gateway in the clouds
While older me misses you wistfully.

However the angels get here
Whenever I find my way there
I'll still enjoy golden sunsets with clouds on fire.
