Cobblestones

I find myself waking to the cold
the half-full moon, the glittering stars
the clouds that glide between them

Lying amidst the cobblestones
blanketed by low fog
listening to the heavy silence
the complete abandonment

Looking around me nothing changes
it’s the same scene
the same eerie quiet
and strange sense of loss

Like shadows they approach
old friends
past lovers
the people I had known so well

Each one calls to me
a loving whisper
a joyful shout
the way I remember best

I try to go to them
reaching out for their hands
following their calls
beckoning me to follow

But one by one they fade away
back into the fog
faster than I can run
the cobblestones make me fall

I’m left all alone in the cold
with the surrounding fog
the encroaching silence
feeling incredibly lost

My bleeding knees
take me to the ground
curled up in a ball
shaking from fright

The fog blinds my vision
silence deafens my ears
cold steals my energy
as my conscious slips

Tired.
Cold.
Alone.
