Cocoon

"You'll never get a job."

"You'll never make good money."

"I just hate to see you be so deep in debt, honey."

Hold on a second now,

can we just take a moment?

Establish that I'm trying to grab a hold of my life, cherish it and own it.

Who says I won't be great or someday make a name.

I'm sure when the One Direction boys did their thing people said the same.

In our world we need degrees from college just to remotely get by,

and at the same time in order to chase our dreams we resort to running our pockets dry?

Alright, you've got me there, but I'm going to be broke anyways.

So let me attempt to make my dreams come true while I wait for some hefty paydays.

By not having total faith in me, you've already clipped my wings.

Wasn't it you, and yeah Jesus too, who told me not to worry about materialistic things?

I'm telling you, and I'm begging please try not to forget,

that the cost of me chasing my dreams will never amount to the cost of a lifetime of regret.

I know you're taking care of your little girl and only looking out for me,

but you don't know my heart's desires or how my life should be.

Maybe I won't be sitting pretty in a comfortable financial place,

though you'll never know by the smile that'll be on my face.

New York City is calling my name and I really want to go.

I just couldn't bear it if our relationship took a blow.

I love you Mom and Dad, and I'd hate to have to choose.

But you're marching into a battle.

A battle you're going to lose.

Don't think of it as losing money, think of it as gaining joy.

Plus a city full of new people means I've got an even better shot at finding a boy!

I could tape pictures around the house to try and sway your vote,

Or maybe I'll get the job done with this thoughtful, rhyming note.

I just want you to try and see things through my eyes.

To see that where I am now is a cocoon,

and it's time for me to be a butterfly.
