Coffee, BBQ Sauce, and Laughter

BBQ Sauce, oninons, and brisket filled my nose

Signaling Mama and Papa's arrival

As well as the start of a very busy day

At Smiddy's BBQ.

I glanced around the warm, bright, sun-filled room;

Basking in the sun's warm rays of light

Seeping in through the open windows.

A smile crept across my face

As laughter billowed in my ears like an afternoon wind.

For a moment, I was reminded of my hometown,

Those Oklahoma winds

That swept up prarie grasses,

Were so strong at times

It seemed at any moment you might be seduced

As they seemed detemined

To sweep you off your feet.

Freshly brewed coffee assaulted my senses;

Waking me from my daydream

As I breathed it in.

I followed the fragrance

Sniffing the air like a bloodhound

I found myself in the presence of my family

Which doubled as my staff.

As I sipped my coffee,

I realized this is my home;

This is my future.
