The Coffee House Fantasy

I had a friend once. He only kept me around because I sung of his praise, but we were friends nevertheless. I used to have this reoccurring fantasy that years after graduation. After we lost touch. After he forgot about me. We’d meet by chance at a nice quant coffee shop. I’d recognize him immediately and then go up to his table to talk to him. Naturally he doesn’t recognize or remember me, but after a moment it all comes rushing back to him. Once he figured out who I was, he’d invite me to sit with him so we can reminisce and catch up. A minute turns into an hour. We realize how much time has past so we agree to go our separate ways. Just when I think all hope is lost, he’d ask me to dinner so we can continue catching up. I cheerfully agree. One dinner turns into ten, ten dinners turns into thirty, and before we know it we’re engaged. Happily married with four kids...and everyday we thank God that we crossed paths that day at the nice quant coffee shop...and finally the invisible girl found her Prince Charming...and we live happily ever after. But real life doesn’t end in happily ever afters, only fairytales do. This is real life. So realistically what would happen is that years after graduation I’d see you in a nice quant coffee shop. Right away I’d recognize you. I’d go up to you to say high. On the inside I hope and pray that you’d remember me, but you don’t. You’d ask me to sit down, not because you want my company...no, because you feel guilty for forgetting me. You start asking me questions...trying to remember where you know this familiar face from. But you never do...you don’t remember. Finally you say you’re late for something...you’re really not. You get up and walk away and we never cross paths again. I’m left there at the nice quant coffee shop table...by myself...with all the memories of the boy who was once my friend...that I knew would never remember me.
