The Cold Transition
We feel our options are so broad,
No end to what we can achieve
Look around at homeless addicts, thinking
That will never be me
There’s something special about that time
When we thought life was worth living
When we lived in unsuspecting accord
And remained oh so forgiving
Apprehension and distress,
Plain ignorance and greed
Time forces us to change
Our notion of security
Now it’s time to pay the bills,
Can’t forget to take your pills,
Moving faster with each day
The hole inside can’t be filled
Education, occupation
What’s it all for in the end?
Submission precedes extinction
Though it’s not what we intend
We try to grab on
As time slips through our hands
Knowing all the while
It’s something we cannot withstand
We’re living in the future;
Choking on the past
Trying to convince ourselves
The sickness will not last
Until that day when we reflect
And see what could have been
Overcome with regret, we ask
Why we can’t live again
