College For All

"To be" or "Not To Be" was the question that was asked,

"To be" the answer that was shouted out by all.

The fear of life, so cruel, so hard,

Without that all important degree.

The letters of the alphabet that spell nothing and yet,

When placed behind your name will lift and elevate.

BS, MA, PhD, they ring out

That I am one who has chosen "To Be".

But what do I do when asked to pay

For this elevation I desperately desire?

For I am from the downcast and trodden,

Trying to escape but with no means to pay the way.

Change is needed, is desperately overdue.

If only the way could be made to first fight for knowledge

And then to pay once  wisdom is achieved,

Once the letters appear following my name

And I am no longer a "To Be" but an "I Am".

Oh, to be able to change the order that has been established

by the few who need not be concerned with that order.

Then the question would not instead be asked

"To Be" or "Unable To Be"?

The question would simply be "How Far Will You Go?"
