College Bound
The road to graduation was long and winding
There were times I felt like pulling over, but kept driving
Like in 9th grade, there was a traffic jam, felt like I was at a standstill
Making no progress, crawling along, I had lost my will
Lost, with no sense of direction, is how I feel
Family yelling, “Jesus, take the wheel!”
But it was my family who steered me away from potholes... My family was my saviour
They helped me find a detour and exit that freeway to failure.
But the city streets were under construction, filled with broken lights and incidents
So many of us struggled with drugs, weapons, fights--it’s no coincidence
The street, through 10th grade, was more of a dirt road
Other drivers engaging in road rage, even some of the warm teachers were cold
I had to look inside myself…………………..to find me
Haters were lurkin’, doubting Thomas’ beside me
Mapquest wasn’t working, no Thomas to Guide me.
Still,I persevered through, road rage and all
Full steam ahead, to 11th grade in the fall
Problem is, I’m running late, credits ain’t up-to-date
I’m trying to get there within 4 years...oooh, I can’t wait!
Made a pit stop at San Andreas but now I’m back...
At San G, had to gas up & fix-a-flat
Making better choices, switching lanes in the coupe
Just me, myself and I, ridin’ in that carpool
Didn’t have any money to pay the toll…
Hit the Fasttrack anyway, now I’m on cruise control
Doin’ bout 75, with the top down
High school’s disappearing in the rearview…
Now...I’m college-bound!
