the Color of My Skin

Picking cotton while the kids at the big house get to go to school

I want to learn to ain't I a real person with blood flowing and a heart

I ask mama when can I go to school like the people in the big house

She tells me it ain't normal and maybe in the future

I wanna know why I can't go now but it all started to make since

The people in the big house were all white

Those that were in the yards picking cotton were black

Did it ever occcur to them that we want to learn to

We kids get tired out in this heat  ain't we people too

The color of my skin doesn't allow me to blend in with them

I began to cry mama wipes my tears and says one day we'll be free

You can learn then and will become a smart person

I tell her when I do become that person I will scream

The color of my skin didn't allow me to blend then but now

Change has come and  I am now bound

The color of my skin has made me appreciate my back ground

for which I have found

That I cam to love and learn that we will make history when we're Free
