Colors

It’s the dirt brown feeling in your gut when you know you have failed.

It’s the sad gray look in your kid’s eyes when they know you are lying about the liquor on your breath.

It’s the yellow grit on your teeth after smoking too many years,

And coming home to your former lover having to say your day was great even though it wasn’t.

It’s the red hot steam on your ears when you walk past a homeless lady,

And she looks up at you with her crystal blue eyes so full of hope and love,

But your dark soul can’t spare a second for her.

It’s the black abyss in your mind as you watch a little boy go up to a casket and say goodbye to someone he barely knew.

It’s the purple tint on your lips as you lie in bed each night with a man who will take your life if you ever say no.

It’s the dark red blood that spills from your hand after writing a love note to the lady down the street,

And the green sickness in your heart knowing you won’t receive a single word back.

It’s the pale pink whisper of your forever friend’s last words.

People use the colors in the rainbow to describe the things we love,

But why do we not use the colors to describe the things that make us uncomfortable?

Would we start to accept those terrible truths as part of life?

What would happen if we told our kids that life will get tough but God loves you so you don’t have to fear,

Instead of lying and telling them everything will be okay?

Kids view yellow as the color of sunshine and happiness,

But what would happen if they knew that the color yellow would be the only color they see on the person they love dying of cancer?

Kids view the color green as springtime and new grass,

But what would happen if they knew the color green as the sickness they would feel when someone lies to them?

Why do we take the rainbow and sing all these happy songs when the same color that represents hope also represents death?

The color of someone’s skin doesn’t represent the color of their character,

Just like the color red doesn’t always represent the color of love.

When will people realize that colors are not just colors?
