Colors
Colors
African AMerican, Negro, and Black .
What they identify me as for the color of my skin ,
but not for the bones in my body, for the presentation I bring ,
because I don't act like I am ,
because I act different all for the reason that they Identify me as ,
White. A privileged color, which I am privileged , by faith .
Because apparently being a different color
And acting a certain way is disrespectful
What’s it like to live the life of a white girl?
Why do you act like a white girl ?
They ask me , as if I’m in shame for being who I am .
Yet because I have mannerś and I’m not screaming
at the top of my lungs with a caribbean accent
All the more reason that I act optimistic to hide the pain inside,
as if my color describeś who I am .
As if God didn't take his time
to form me with his bare hands, like he didn't give me the ability to
embrace my personality. Like I can't be Black and have class.
That word again , Black , what I have to deal with on a daily basis ,
the reason I hate pictures and why I barely have friendś that look
like me because I don't want to be judged for liking my color .
Since I have it , since it explains my story , what if thats how
we were introduced to the world. “Hello , I'm a Black girl who
chooseś to act the way I am because I have a story. ¨ I felt a burden
to keep a smile on my face and become who I am not , so I apologize
sincerely if who I am isn't enough for your tiny mind to understand that
you have to understand who I am as a person isn't about the color of my skin .
So the next time you want to say I act like a white girl ,
think about it , you don't know the story and it wouldn't
make sense for you to judge either.
I'm ? What am I ? a canvas painted black with sploches of color everywhere .
A representation of me , my colors…
