Comfortable

Social media feeds

While our hearts bleed

Daily destruction

The new norm

Performative celebrations

Pit religious adherants

Against each other

Using spiritual iconography

In a game of

Divide and conquer

Seems now

To be deemed

Acceptable

When out there

Is too much

To bear

We listen to tales

Of internal monologues

Being pathologised

In an effort

To be heard

When will we learn

There are no winners

When we play the colonisers' game

Making ourselves less

To fit into narrow moulds

Conform to expectations of being

Palatable

Tinkering with the detail

Of our gilded cage

Will neither change

Our material conditions

Nor set us free

Thinkers before us

Have been pointing out

The folly of our ways

Consenting to play games

With the odds stacked against us

Using our very lives

As collateral

Akin to madness

But don't call it that

Don't name a thing

To be able to address it

Lest you be institutionalised

Your resistance song medicalised

While those maintaining the status quo remain

Comfortable
