Communication Lost

I never knew her

I never knew that her dad was in jail because he beat the shit out of her mom. That she was only in this school because he was getting released soon and her and her mom had to change last names and move away. I didn't know she lived that kind of life, one with constant worry and hatred. I didn't know that's the reason she never trusted anyone, and took the pain out on herself. Why she was always quiet, and never let people in.

I never knew him

I never knew that he was always put in the middle of his parents. Ever since their divorce, he was forced to chose sides, forced to come to terms with his family not being the 'happy family' like he thought they were. School became his outlet. He was always the funny guy, but that's because he just needed attention. He never wanted to go home. I didn't know that's why he got into drugs, to ease the pain of his broken family, of his broken life.

I never really knew themWhy?

I could have been there for them, tried to help. But I didn't.

Fuck. Why didn't I?

There's a lack of caring in the world and it's because of how we communicate. Change is a huge word, but it must start with ourselves. Instead of judging or ignoring those that are different, maybe the first step to change is to branch out and truly care for those that need it. Then the broken, the hurting, the lost, the scared can all come together and say,

I know them, and I love them.
