Complacency

Location

A boy

Kneeling by the bed

Dreading what he has to do

A grimace spreads on his innocent face

A whimper escapes his lips

As client spreads them

Tears brim in once-bright eyes

He pleads with a silent god

“How did it come to this?”

A girl

Standing on her mother’s favorite chair

Slipping the rope over her head

A smile colors her face

A final breath exits her tired body

As she takes her ultimate step

Tears fall one last time from saddened eyes

She wonders as she falls

“How did it come to this?”

A man

Delivering an address to gathered crowd

Demanding answers that nobody has

A frown sets in his hardened face

A call to action cracks his voice

As he begs the world to change

Tears form in impassioned eyes

He leaves the crowd with final words

“How did it come to this?”

A society

Shuffling through our everyday lives

Paying no attention to the world around us

A look of complacency plastered on our faces

A sigh of indifference over our unused tongues

As we watch whatever is on TV

Tears should be falling for our fellow people

No one even thinks to ask

“How did it come to this?”
