Compliments
My house was built on compliments
Yes, I know your word was supposed to be my foundation,
But you never spoke loud enough to me so I allowed the people
Around me to become source of validation
I was; thirsty
Thirst like searching for water in the desert, steadily swallowing
The spit compliments ignoring you my tall glass of water from
Heaven.
I was afraid you; because you required greatness
And greatness requires growth
And growth meant stretching
And stretching meant pain
And I never was a fan of pain before pleasure
So I ignored you and built this house out of meaningless phrases .
That in the end were never enough because
I still hated the girl in the mirror.
But my house always looked good,
Always sparkled and shined
But I never told anyone that my walls were built
In shame to hide this sin, that the roof leaked with regret
And it suffered water damage because the halls were
flooded with tears.
That I never slept soundly because I was always afraid
That someone would steal my compliments, my only
Confidence, because I was only as good as they told me.
Then you came and I tried not to let you in, ashamed,
But you broke down the door of my heart and entered
anyway. Bulldozed down my walls and exposed my brokenness
You rebuilt me, it hurt, but God does it feel better
You replaced my roof with forgiveness and dried my tears,
While rebuilding my walls with grace and mercy, and at
Night I sleep soundly, safely
Because you are the foundation that validates me.
