Concrete
I wrote feverishly,
page after page,
line after line,
stanza after stanza
in search of something far greater than myself.
Instead, I found concrete.
Writing poetry sent me running on concrete
I wouldn't have hit otherwise.
It gave me the freedom to speak words
I was too cowardly to utter in person.
It forced me to move.
It gave me a sense of identity that I could not give myself.
I let it.
I ran across that concrete
with every metaphor and I made myself stronger.
Tougher.
Agile.
Poetry gave me perspective.
You are more than suburbia,
you have art running from your fingertips.
There is concrete stretched out in front of you,
and it will lead you to where you need to go.
