The Condition Of Our Lives
Created By: Yamaiyah Jones
In slavery, we are oppressed
Shot down by our superior
We settle into this state at birth
Constantly constant
Breaking down, broken
Our mental capacity transforms us into being inferior
We are often controlled
What we wear, what we eat, what we like
Who to love, what to say, what to see
This state submits to the road we choose to take
Our love submits into this mental state
And our temple has no need to say what it truly needs to say
An infinity symbol is something we cannot become
Our minds won't allow it
Life always comes to an end
The restrictions placed on our livestyles are knit
Knit into a place of conforming
We are stuck
Placed in a stray jacket of our own mental health
The rain placed above us calls down
Only to our luck
We might shout at it
Afraid of its becoming
Its morph frightens our soul
The showering rain of fortune, unfortunately unloving
But this does not define us
Our power, our sins, our love, our goals
This melanin, my beautiful skin
My enlightenment overshadows my sins
My voice- once overpowered
I was silenced, silent
Quiet
I now use this voice to create, to encourage, to love
My soul is driven
Driven by this magical entity placed above my eyes
My lies, kidnapped
This overwhelming force once cried, weeped, yearned for love
I now use this broken mental capacity as a strength more than a weakness
Introducing myself to my flaws but overtime breaking down my walls
Walls, the barrier placed above me
Finding my voice through poetry
Through expressing, learning, teaching, crying, weeping, experiencing
Experiencing the pain transformed by my temple
I believe in love but loss
In equality, in society, in spirit
I believe in loyalty, in strength, in care, and endearment
Our freedom- the most intoxicating creature
I've found my voice, now it's time to believe it
