Conversation with Self

Here we are.

It’s just us now.

The only thing you brought with you….

Let’s talk.

You’re scared, yes?

You’re always scared, aren’t you.

Here we are together again

For a brief moment.

You like to run from me, don’t you?

You like to play and hide and laugh

But you knew this day would come…

You can’t run from me forever.

Let’s talk about your insecurities, shall we?

Or maybe that mark on your forehead,

Where you fell as a child and it never seemed to go away?

And you always thought it made you look damaged?

Let’s talk, sit down, we have time.

Why else would we be on this deserted island together?

Maybe it’s for us to get to know each other a little better…

You sure like to distract yourself, don’t you.

I watch you every day…

How you could laugh and talk forever,

Go out and stay late, because you don’t want to be alone...

and when you are, you curl up

counting experiences on your fingers

asking if you’ve lived enough for another day.

Then you plead with God to end your pain

but you still keep living.

Tell me, girl.... Have you lived enough?

Have you tasted your share of pain?

Of joy? Of heartbreak? Of love?

Have you leaped and done cartwheels?

Have you danced in the rain, and cried in the rain

because tears mix with the water so well...

Have you run far and wide?

Have you run far enough?

Because here I am,

In the end it comes down to us.

It’s you and I through it all.

Whether you notice me,

Whether you care,

I’ll always be there.
