Conversing with Heartbeats

How could you forget last time?

Remember the pain?

The manipulation?

You were pulled in every way.

(But look at that smile!)

Yes, very nice,

but the last time you saw a smile like that

you were told how beautiful you were,

just before you were yelled at

about wanting to see your friends.

(But those clear blue pools!)

Yeah, I get it, pretty,

but just because the last pair looked

more mud-like than water-colored

doesn’t mean they’re hiding anything different.

(But that laugh!)

Of course it’s melodious,

but what does that matter if you expect

that same voice to be the source

of your anger, fear, hatred,

in a year’s time.

(Don’t lie, he makes you happy!)

Yeah, he makes me laugh

and I’m so relaxed with him….now,

but give it time and a couple fights,

and all he’ll bring is pain.

You know that.

(Those strong arms were meant for holding you)

Or hurting you.

(He wouldn’t)

You know that for sure?

(I can’t tell the future!)

It’s like talking to a child

demanding a treat at the grocery store.

I want it! I want it! I want it!

(Well, you do want it…)

Doesn’t matter. I’m not giving it to either of us.

(So lock yourself up forever?)

Maybe, I can’t tell the future.

(You’re too young to be this jaded.)

Weren’t you hurt last time?

Weren’t you angry?

Weren’t you scared?

Weren’t you trapped?

Weren’t you imagining a life

where you’d never know happiness

all because you promised to make him happy?

(You know I was.)

So why jump in again?

Why go through it when you know the end

is going to bring it all back?

(You don’t know it’ll be the same.)

How do you know it won’t be?

(I don’t know. I just have this feeling.)

….He is pretty special.

(I think it’ll be good this time.)

And if it’s not?

(And if it is?)
