Could Have Been Somebody

Every one wants to be a hero,

To be an action figure on some child's shelf.

I thought being a good man was all it takes.

But I can't save them all. I can't even save myself.

I have watched as those I love cry

While inside the darkness eats them alive.

All they asked was to be held and deemed worthy

But my choices and words were nothing but knives.

Lies spilled from my lips but I thought them true.

Maybe they did too, but I ever proved false.

Now I've broken their trust and I question myself,

How can anyone want to be a part of my waltz?

Thrice I have been graced with affection

And twice I have torn that affection asunder.

I'm on my third chance now but all I see,

Destruction, by my own hand, dragging us under.

I've lied to myself in the past. This fact

Conceals any truths that might exist in what I feel.

The weight of all I've done rests in my heart.

Now what can a false hero do but kneel.

Once, a healer, I could have risen to glory.

But alas, a leach, that simply isn't my story.
