Of Course, Not

“That ride still available?”

Of course,
I blush
thinking I am making an impression
because just previously,
he called me sweet
And I felt like the kind
that glides loosely on the tongue
slipping between crevices,
a flavor, sucked plain.
Instead I was the generic kind
of sweet
that costs 99 cents,
no tax.

“Can you take her home too?”

What do you see,
when you look at me
Does the darkness of my complexion
relay a certain sentiment
Or is it transparent
revealing
the simplicity of my normative knowledge
Because I see skin so dark
lines cannot be read from the outside
A heart, heavy,
impossible to hide
A smile unfading,
because believe me, I’ve tried.
And as for what I said earlier,
I’m sorry I lied
you and your friend,
 can walk.
