A Coxswain's Fears

Eight pairs of eyes stare at me,

Waiting for my commands.

I wish I could flee,

But I cannot stand,

I wait for the officials to call my name,

Only the wind makes a noise,

Bringing waves,

Pushing us into the shore.

Eight pairs of eyes stare at me,

Only I can steer us to the course,

But I fear their disappointment glares.

They control the oars,

Yet I control more,

One wrong tug on the rope,

One wrong choice said out of my mic,

I shatter their diligently.

Eight pairs of eyes stare at me,

And I lead us down the race course,

Although fear consumes me

I yell encouragement to the

eight pairs of eyes staring at me.

Because I practiced weeks for today

And fear will not stop me.

Eight pairs of eyes stare,

Trusting me.
