Cracked Mirrors
I only see my fathers reflection in cracked mirrors
And that fear of being less than perfect draws nearer
Like the past
Nearer like the Serpent when I see you in that glass
Like the Serpent servin’ certain circles, slithering in grass
Clearly masked
With an apple for your eye
(Which was I)
Disappear! I wasn’t worth it when you seen me in your hands, was I?
Now I only see you through the pieces of a man….
And as far as they can see
I’m just another son shunned to vacancy
And though I rose like the summer sun it has taken me life to conjure tears thicker than the blood you gave to me
Although those tears never fell
They swelled and they stayed cuz they ain’t wanna be like you…
The truth is I’m confused
Am I bitter? Do I hate you? Am I angry? Do I love you? Does it matter?
Do I choose..?
The space between anger and longing is gray
And so I pray to never see a cracked mirror on the day that I’ve got my own son
When I’ve grown
And got a wife
Cuz if I stray, I’ll see you for the rest of my life
And you’ll probably never hear this
My voice is as calm as the Spirit
Although I have no rage that doesn’t mean that I am fearless
Only seen you once yet you’re so much in my appearance
