In this Crazy World We Live

In this crazy world we live

We see all kinds of people

Some are very real

They let the world see

Who they truly are

Then there are others

Who seem not real

They are fake

They are fixed

They changed themselves to be

More like those whom they see on TV

They want to be like

A girl made of plastic

One who doesn’t grow old

Doesn’t change

Doesn’t come out of the spotlight

They want to be worthy

Of likes online

They don’t want to let people down

Or show who they really are

All they want is the glamour

The fame

The money

So they can spend it all

And repeat the cycle

I even got caught up in this

“How can you talk about this?”

“Your so skinny”

“You cannot be insecure”

I am not supposed to be like this

I am supposed to be confident

But I didn’t like the way I looked

I was insecure

Not confident

Not at all

And scared of judging eyes

I watched all of these girls

Who are like models

Instagram stars

The perfect girl

The ones whom all of us envy

This made me watch myself

Seeming to only see where I fell short

Where I gained weight

Where I wasn’t perfect

I didn’t want to catfish the world

I looked in the mirror and saw

All the things that society says is wrong

I saw where I fell short

Even if not by much

I saw a girl

One who is only told

That you are not good enough

I look and think

I may be being too harsh on myself but,

Could the mirror possibly be lying

Could it see things that I didn’t want to see?

People definitely could though

They would publicly point it out

They were cruel about the things they saw in me

But, this is the society we are in

But is this the way we want the next generation to feel

Do we want our children to go through

This hellish mentality

This way of thinking that

We are not good enough

I want to have children

Not have to question

Why they look a certain way

Or justify why their body is changing

Why do we feel the need to do this?

The only way I can seem to explain this is

Because of things I saw

In the mall

On television

In the grocery store

Where I saw

Skinny celebrities

Weight loss tricks

And many fashion magazines

They would show the young and impressionable

The dark reality of this world

They see what women are supposed to look like

As well as what they look like without

All of their glamorous makeup and clothing

We are eager to see

The imperfections of others

The flaws they have

The parts of them that make them seem

More human, more relatable

We look for these flaws in these celebrities

But we are really looking for them in ourselves

Subconsciously, for the most part

We are also unknowingly trained

To think that things such as cellulite

Is bad and it is ok to make fun of

To ridicule

We are also taught to be insecure

We are not born with insecurities

Young children are not insecure about

Their waist size

Their complexion

We are taught to see things that

Do not conform to what has been taught

We are conditioned to feel

Ashamed

Embarrassed

Of the things that make us different

The things that make everyone unique

But the world is not going to just change

Not tomorrow

Not next week

Not even next year

And this is difficult

Because there is no easy fix

No way to completely get rid of all the ideals

No shortcuts or hidden passageways

We have to change

Change the minds

Change the ideas

 Of many people

To be able to get heads to turn and things to change

We can do this by showing the world

You with no filter

No shame

No fear

This will cause many more

Women and men alike

To realize that they are strong

That they have strength

Because you are showing the most vulnerable parts of yourself

This doesn’t mean

You need to not be glamorous

This just means that a healthy balance is key

Sometimes this balance is hard to keep when

People point out flaws you had never thought to notice

This just shows that I’m human

That I don’t know how to be and feel invincible

But some things can help

One: Purge yourself of those that make you feel like

You are not beautiful on a daily basis

This be a huge impact on how you see yourself in the mirror

And how much confidence you truly have

Two: Live a healthier lifestyle

This focus on making you feel better inside

Will help you feel better on the outside

Three: Remind yourself that the world is seen through filters of perfection

That the world you see on the internet is the best parts of people’s lives

Don’t set the impossible goal of meeting the fake standards

We are all imperfectly beautiful

Even when you feel not so sure

There is a network

A whole world

Right behind you

Ready to support you

To catch you if you fall

Embrace your natural beauty

Celebrate others and how beautiful you are

Just don’t forget that we are

Unique

Imperfect

And Powerful

In this crazy world we live
