Cricket Lullaby
a cricket played the violin
underneath my creaky bed
the night air lingered with his chirps
as it filled my sleepy head
he plucked until the early morn
when one night I heard no more
wondering if his strings had broke
or if his sails were sore
longing for the gentle tune
as I lie awake and weep
the lullaby of his grazing wings
would rock me sound to sleep
his song was never noisy
and his instrument was bliss
the genius of the harmonizing
is one I so sorely miss
searching for him day and night
on sills and cracks below
until the eve I finally heard
the sweet gliding of his bow
