The Cricket's Hymn

As the waters receded
At the edge of the shore
As the shadows proceeded
To prepare Nyx's war
As the last lights retreated
Into Atlas's door
A cricket sang in the night

It sang of the sun
And the moon and the stars
It sang of the meadows
And the trees and the flowers
It sang of the beauty of life
in its powers
It sang of the things that were good

The night was in hatred
Of the cricket that sang
And would hence not depart
'Till the cricket was slain
So it cried out to Zeus
And beseeched him for rain
And behold a huge storm ensued

The storm raged in the night
It ravaged all life
The storm whirled and hurled
Winds as sharp as a knife
It brought chaos and ruin
And with Nature did strife
But still the cricket sang on

Through the dark of the night
Through the brunt of the storm
The cricket kept singing
of its memories warm
And its will never wavered
And its voice never mourned
And the storm was moved by its song

So the storm went its way
It departed the night
And the cricket remained
Having lived through the fight
And still it was singing
As it waited for the light
And the night departed hence

As the waters proceeded
To the edge of the shore
And the shadows retreated
Deep into the earth's core
As the first lights competed
For the first break of dawn
A cricket sang in the morn

As Eos did herald
The coming of day
And Hemera release
Her golden bouquet
And as Helios unveiled
His glorious rays
The cricket sang still more

Moral:

The night is always darkest before the dawn
And the storms will always be there
But the cricket will keep on singing his song
And for daylight will always prepare
For he knows that there is yet light to come
And he puts his joy to a prayer
For he is desirous of good things to come
And with goodness nothing can compare

Good things come to those who wait
But also to those who watch.
