The Cries of a Smile
A pretty smile
plastered on a pretty face
Unchanging,
Conditioned,
Ensured to last.
She smiles through it all.
A wicked family?
She smiles.
Cleaner in her eyes?
She smiles.
Dust in her nose?
She smiles.
For years and years of broken dreams,
Of unjust hate,
Of loneliness,
She smiles.
But the times when she does cry,
Those very rare instances,
The intense,
Life changing moments
A ripped dress A locked door
That stopped her from going to the ball; That stopped her from marrying the prince;
The ball where she’d meet the prince; The prince she sang a song with;
A prince she knew not a thing about. A song about true love.
A prince she knew she loved.
Even though she hates how
his burps smell like sauerkraut,
his father is always in his business,
he spends an hour on his hair,
he ignores her stories and ideas,
he shuts down her positivity,
he strikes her out of the frustration
of hating the person you spend
THE REST OF YOUR LIFE WITH
Because you didn’t take the time
to get to know the person
behind the pretty face.
But all that doesn’t matter.
She won’t bring it up.
She’ll just keep on keeping on with
A pretty smile
plastered on a pretty face.
