Crocodile Words

The words come out

as smooth as a snake's skin,

"You'll be alright,

have no fright,"

trying to soothe the pain

that wouldn't leave.

I reject those words whole-heartedly.

And as I lay on the floor

in the dark

after the deed and the work have been done

I lay there and ponder,

Was it really worth it?

Was it really worth it at all?
