Crowned Poet
As a little girl I always wanted to be a princess
I always wanted a prince to slay my dragon
To be rescued from the trenches
And to proudly wear my precious crown
I waited for happily ever after but it failed to arrive
I still found creatures lurking at the forest’s edge
I found witches that plagued the treacherous nights
These creatures did not threaten me by breathing a billowing fire
Nor did the witches offer me poisonous apples to fright
But rather loomed in my mind
To cause a horror show in the night
They replayed my fears and insecurities
At dawn I was sure they would take their leave
Instead they followed me as shadows of the day
It seemed to be a never-ending reel until I found you
Your words were the weapon that I wielded
Your spirit formed my crown
My prince charming came in the shape of a poem
Crafted by my mind to be my greatest defender
You shielded me from the agony
Taught me how to express myself
How to feel myself
And how to be myself
Life had tainted me
It stripped away my hopeful youth
And carved me into a dense hollow shell
But it was you who reminded me
I always wanted to be a princess
But what I found was a queen
Armed with ink that shed the blood of her demons
Through you I found me
