To Cry or Not To Cry

To cry or not to cry – that is the question
Whether ‘tis nobler in the heart to suffer
The cuts and bruises of horrific torture
Or to take arms against outrageous violence
And by refusing, end him. Too weak, too small –
No strength – and by morning we say
The fear and thousand tears
That eyes heir to – ‘tis an outcome
Desperately to be concealed. Too weak, too small –
Too small, perhaps too beaten. Ay, there it is
For in that petite of hope what light may come
When we have shuffled off our dignity,
Please give us a hand. Where’s the respect
That makes purpose of life’s worth,
For who would bear the blood and pain of it,
Th’ threats wrong, the sick man’s abuse,
The pangs of dismissed care, the hands sting,
The innocence of some, and the whip
That we take of our unworthy bodies,
How he himself might make of a day
With a bare smile? Who would happily bear,
To threat and danger our weary lives,
But we dread of another morning
Where the undiscovered spots he’s yet to beat,
We dream of no return, puzzles our strength
And makes us rather bear these hits we have
Thank prayers to those we know not of?
Thus prayer does make hope for us all,
And thus the beating of tomorrow
Is sicklied o’er with the slight cast of hope,
And venture the effort and strength
With this regard our thoughts turn amiss
And lose the light of hope.
