Dad
Dad,
You took my innocence away when I was still a child.
I was a child who had to grow into an adult at such a young age,
Your drinking ruined my childhood.
When I was younger my day revolved around you.
I would come home from school and I would pray that you weren’t home.
When you were home I avoided you like the plague
Because you are a mean and angry drunk man.
I thought I was finally free from your grasp
Mom finally had divorced you and I was away from you.
I can’t believe I was so naïve,
I actually thought I was free from you.
Unfortunately, cell phones make it so that you are never far
I wake up with a message from you
And I go to bed with a text from you.
Seeing your name on my screen makes me want to scream.
Why, oh why, can’t you just leave me alone.
I have to talk to you and see you way too often
And all I want to be is free from you.
I will never be free from your cold heartless grasp
Until I find the courage of a mighty lion.
One day I will find the strength to make you leave me alone.
For now I will find the strength to keep pushing past the pain of heart break.
Goodbye.
