Dad

It's too soon, too soon to say goodbye

I see you in your hospital bed

So many words in my mind, so many words in my heart

They fill my mouth

And yet, not a sound escapes my lips

Inside, I weep and wonder

Why can I not say these feelings?

Am I afraid of these emotions?

Or am I afraid of seeing yours?

Too much anger, too much sadness

My heart aches at the thought of your life slipping through your trembling fingers

How does it feel, to be trapped within your body?

Do you have emotions that are trapped within you, too?

But here we sit, quiet as church mice

Looking into one another's eyes

Knowing what lies ahead

It's too soon, too soon to say goodbye
