Daddy Came Home

Hear the voice of a little girl,

puzzled by her mother’s tears.

As her brother rubs her back,

whispering a soldier's lullaby.

Her grandma hangs her head,

overcome and can not speak.

Her older sister is quiet,

doing the chores for mother.

Confusion is all she feels,

it was supposed to be a happy day!

For daddy was coming home,

to give her the kiss he promised,

oh so long ago.

She asks where he is,

but no one will say.

Her mind is a mess,

and doesn’t understand.

That daddy came home,

in a box with a flag.

The truth comes,

a knife through her tiny heart.

Her cries echo through the night.

For another hero and father lost.
