The Dance

            Slowly, we dance our waltz,

One two three, one two three, on and on,

But I’m on two when you’re on one,

And I know how this dance ends,

            Slowly, the music builds,

And we keep going in three-four time,

And I clutch your arm as you put your hand on the small of my back,

But this dance won’t last much longer,

And then he comes in on two,

And I’m on two, and it is beautiful

Because I let you fall away

As he and I tango,

His voice is pleasing to my ears,

And his name feels right on my tongue,

And he makes step one when I do,

And his grasp is firm yet gentle,

And when we finished our tango,

He handed me a rose, and we danced the paso doble,

And I fell in love with way my hand fit in his

Because it felt strong and right,

Quickly, my life transitioned to two-four time,

And we danced with passion,

And I loved his strength,

I did not miss the safety of the waltz.
