Dance of Desperation

On this lonely little island, I dance my two step,

One, two,

Trudge to get the coconuts,

Three, four

Break them open and an abundance of water cascades out.

I know with this luminous sun and friendly blue sky,

I shouldn’t feel so lonely,

I know even with the perspiration of a thousand suns ebbing it’s way through my pores,

I should never feel cold,

But I feel oh so icy.

Five, six

The trees sway hypnotically, and sand sticks to my feet.

Seven, eight

The breeze ghosts ever so lovingly on my skin, like a mother’s caress.

I brush my fingers where the phantom touch had been,

And I am awash with yearning…

For the smiles of my family, for the warm, tender hugs of friends…

I don’t know why I feel worthy of this sort of intimacy anymore,

Or why I can no longer accept my fate.

Nine, ten.

Repeat again,

The mindless trudgery, the overwhelming loneliness, and that faint glimmer of hope.
