Dancing My Way Through
Thump. Thump. Thump.
My sister looked up to see where the racket was coming from,
and she just saw me sprawled across the floor.
“What ARE you doing down there?”
I had just come back from my first break dance class, and I was “practicing,”
or at least that’s what I considered it as.
I was excited to learn a new style of dance,
but I couldn’t seem to get my spindly arms and legs to move the way they should.
A few years later, I got roped into a fan dance.
I felt totally out of my element,
not that dance was my element in the first place.
When our first group practice came,
we turned on the song to test the waters,
and I performed just as I had practiced on my own for weeks.
“Allen, how do you dance like that?"
"That’s totally in sync with the video!"
"Teach us!” my friends exclaimed.
That was how my reputation as a dancer began.
