Dangerously Close

“Wax wings will melt - don’t fly too close to the sun”

His father warned as driver’s training begun

“I’ll never” Icarus promised thinking ‘easier said than done’

One year later, drivers license in hand

Icarus left home late to see his favorite band

Hopped on the freeway - his route perfectly planned

“I can push one hundred” Icarus said

Ignoring his father’s words echoing in his head

He wanted the thrill of the speed instead

Around a bend of the road where he couldn’t see

Everyone had stopped for a traffic emergency

Icarus’s wax wings melted and he fell in the sea

Gasping for air, waves of pain lasted longer

Surrounded by glass, Icarus realized he was never wronger

Than the day he thought his wax wings were stronger

The sun shone down, mercilessly hot

While Icarus sank in the ocean he had a thought

“My father was right” but the realization was for naught

Icarus took his last breath and then drowned

His father’s words he ignored he heard as his final sound

“Wax wings will melt - don’t fly too close to the sun,” how profound
