The Dark
Have you ever loved the dark,
and washed against its tide;
let it cleanse your earthly soul,
as it seeped inside.
Have you ever drowned in woe,
when things were but all gay;
you ran away from joys that came,
chose by sorrow to stay.
Have you ever gazed at midnight,
looked on and on and on—
your eyes drank in the moon and stars,
and wished they were never gone.
Have you ever contemplated time,
feared the end was drawing near,
and that someday you shall lose,
everything you hold dear.
Have you ever kissed a girl,
whose eyes were weary of life;
watched her despair drench your soul;
still you took her as your wife.
Have you ever felt at peace,
sinking into a suffering deep;
wore sadness about your holy spirit,
and let it lull you to sleep.
Have you truly loved the dark;
in its depths dared to go,
where your soul bathed in colours,
that light shall never know. . .
