Dark Nights

I never payed it any time,

It hardly crossed my weary mind.

But late at night when all alone,

I feel an ache deep in my bones.

And like a cancer soon it spreads,

Spreading to my heart and head.

A pleasant mem'ry from the past,

But surely never meant to last.

A picture now sits on my shelf,

of who I was, my young old self.

But nothing now is left at all.

My youth is leaving with the fall.

I am not ready for the winter,

Rather I would still here linger.

But now a voice is to me calling,

And I must soon be following.
