For David
For David
Mr. David Leon Sleppy, how do you do?
She’s missed you so much – this I knew.
Your life, though I never knew you well, has touched mine remarkably.
Because of you, I think of my actions more thoughtfully.
I hear of you and the life you led
And all of the tears that now must be shed.
I wonder how such a man and how such a quick death
Could suddenly make me catch my breath.
I never knew you well,
But from what I heard and what I could tell –
You were a great man, Mr. Sleppy.
I’m so sorry the cancer spread so quick!
You didn’t even know, Time was too slick –
Your new grandson, Leo,
Would be so proud to know he was named after a hero.
Mr. David, wouldn’t you know?
Wouldn’t you guess what old conflicts show?
All people desire is closure,
(Which many seek through religious measure)
But Mr. Sleppy, what do you propose
For the girl who believes He never rose?
This girl you once was met was thinking of you.
You made everyone you knew proud, it’s true –
And now it’s my turn to do this for you.
Good night, Mr. Sleppy! Farewell, adieu!
Remember this poem is strictly for you.
