The Day I Flew

As a girl, I had always been quiet The one they could never figure out They would always try to read me like a book But all they could see were blank pages Or so they thought... When I first was introduced to poetry, It was in elementary school The language was fierce But at the same time discreet Just like me I wanted to learn how to sound like the poets I wanted to do what they did I wanted to be understood on a deeper level So I began to write And write And write I think I had found my niche The flow just came so natural to me Not to mention the different styles and techniques Poetry to me, was like a wonderland of possiblities Then one spring day, in class I was writing a beautiful and childlike poem My teacher called me out She asked me, "What is so important that has you distracted?" I stood out my desk Looked up And read my poem, "Flutter" About a caterpillar turning into a butterfly Being liberated from its cocoon Just like me My teacher took my poem And smiled Ever since then, I wrote And wrote And wrote But now, I write.
