The Day My Dad was Forced to Move Away

I never thought my life would change so soon.

I thought that I had tons of years to play.

But I was forced to grow that day in June,

The day my dad was forced to move away.

Before he left, he calmly said to me,

“My son, you are the man who’ll save the day.”

I felt all the responsibility

The day my dad was forced to move away.

I had a brother who was only nine.

To him, all of my attention, I gave.

To think about myself there was no time.

The day my dad was forced to move away.

He did not understand what we had lost.

He even grew familiar, I would say.

Perhaps he will not even think about

The day my dad was forced to move away.

For him, I was the one to go play ball.

He liked to look to me to be OK.

But I was left without a dad at all

The day my dad was forced to move away.

Of course, my mom would not be overcome

And many times, my fears, she would allay.

But it was hard once two parents were one

The day my dad was forced to move away.

My chores and bores increased and multiplied.

Recreation would still be delayed.

With my new role, I had no time to cry.

The day my dad was forced to move away.

I felt like I had finally grown up.

But I do not feel ready to this day.

I learned time takes time off for none of us

The day my dad was forced to move away.

Aware of price and stress, I never bought.

The Legos were left at the stores to stay

But like them, I was let go and distraught

The day my dad was forced to move away.

Back then, the reason why, I did not know.

But now, I know that we had bills to pay.

A piece of me had said goodbye also,

The day my dad was forced to move away

But when I tend to try to think about,

If I could change the past, right now, today,

I don’t think that I should or would swap out

The day my dad was forced to move away.

Although it forced myself to grow up fast

I’m happy with the person I became

Smart and kind and happy with the past

Because my dad was forced to move away.
