Days Like Today

Days like today
More ordinary than the last
make my veins ache
my knees wobble
my ribs rattle

I am shaken into existence
Into a reality of unnecessary expectations
of inevitable failure

Once before, I’ve awoken from a dark sleep
A bleak vision of black that engulfed my dreams
My eyes adjust to the light of a misty morning that leaks through the shutters
making lines across the room

The dust, the very atoms in the air
Float delicately in streams of yellow liquid sunlight that breaks through the morning
And dance between my fingertips

Days like today are the most significant
They remind me of my humanity
In a universe of bright stars that die and collapse into a new dawn
Of the very stardust that makes my body writhe with life

I am reminded of my mortality as the sun of a new day rises
Pure chance allows my survival
In days like today
