De una Erendira a la otra/From one Erendira to Another
Estimada Eréndira:
Tú eras una princesa Purépecha
Una guerrera
Una campeona
Nacida para mandar tú gente
Valientemente pero finalmente sin éxito
Contra los Conquistadores
Mis padres me dieron tu nombre
Pienso yo,
Porque esperaron que yo heredaría
Tu ánimo
Tu valor
Tu justicia
Translation
Dear Eréndira,
You were a Purépecha princess,
A warrior,
A champion.
Born to lead your people
Bravely but ultimately unsuccessfully
Against the Spanish Conquistadores,
My parents named me after you
I think,
Because they hoped that I would inherit
Your spirit
Your bravery
Your righteousness.
A girl with that name in this world has got to be strong,
they must have figured.
But I think I might have gotten the heartache instead.
Because anger, without drive
Is just destruction.
Pain, without release
Suffocation.
Sadness, without cause
Pointless
Well, the stories don’t agree on how you died.
Was it because
Of grief, after your father fell in battle,
Or self-hatred, from falling in love with Spanish monk,
Or fury, at losing the war and all your people.
But they do agree, that the knife that took your life
You was the one holding it.
What does that mean for me?
Eréndira
