Dead Man's Song

I heard a chord so sweet and sad I wandered towards the sound It played and played, I walked for days My tears kept running down Thousands roamed beside me Yet no one said a word So obsessed with that sad song All else was never heard This dead man's song For the broken, beaten, the scared This dead man's song Only we sing along 'Cause no one else will care Shadows grow upon the snow As we walked the lonely path Long time we tracked that somber sound Not a broken soul looked back Finally we found him The player of the chords He gazed at us without a sound There was no need for words Tall and thin was he A cloak of black he wore Skeletal fingers on strings so cold His face, sunken and torn He played that note with great finesse And added thousands more He played for us the dead man's lullaby Our tears began to pour The dead man's song For the broken, beaten, the scared This dead man's song We sang along With that guitar man He led us on a dark parade Our shadows all now one And took us to the precipice The Earth's end and Hell's begun Down, down, down the lonely fell As Death played on No screams, no words or sound Down the masses went, not to be missed, just gone Finally came my turn My feet moved on their own The melody that led me there To the edge to free my soul Suddenly the music stopped Though Death’s cold hands still played From my heart was born a light And filled with warmth, it stayed Lips parched and cracked, I awoke I lifted my head, then my soul Death looked on as I gazed down Looked down and whispered…no
