Dear 2017
Dear 2017,
So, I've come to this, my Senior year
Ten years ago, I thought of this great time with no fear
Even twelve months before the fateful day
I thought my perfect life will always be that way
Future swim Captain, got a job the day you were born
Great family, no drama, straight A's I swore
That you'd be the best year of my life
"It could never be bad" my father told to his wife
Oh wow, I kid you not, you've been my worst mistake
If I had the power, I'd skip you- whatever it'd take
How one's life could flip so easily upside down
Instead of 'living the life' I have felt like I will drown
Yeah, there's still Christmas, and my family is with me
But you've taken all joy from my life that I can see
"What have I done?!" is what you'll probably scream
Well, let me tell you what hell you've been, 2017
It all started on January 10th
When you took my neighbor/grandpa, and my mental strength
You see I've never have had to deal with a close, painful death
It didn't really help that we don't know when he took his last breath
Then my great grandma, yes one-hundred and seven
Died two days later, wow that's nice, hope she's in Heaven
I cried for days, and wept out loud
But then my friends got annoyed, so I didn't make a sound
How do you expect a lonely sixteen year old
To deal with two deaths, so disruptive and bold
It was fine for a while, at least I still had my grades
But then you know what depression does, food helped the pain
So I ate more than I should, and even though I swam
I couldn't get the mentality to not want to eat a whole ham
Yeah that's funny, and you left me at peace
Until my very last day of being a Junior, and you took everything with a breeze
Literally. A breeze. 'Cause I was literally walking
When I fell to the floor as I just sat there crying
I sprained my ankle, at the beginning of the summer
And for a dedicated swimmer, that's a major bummer
I had so many hopes, and goals and plans
I was going to go to State with my teammates again.
But with an injury like that, I had to kiss those dreams goodbye
For four weeks straight, I could only sit, watch others, and sigh
I wept for myself, what did you expect me to do!?
You took two loved ones away, and gave me a swollen ankle that couldn't fit in a shoe!!
When I could swim again, I tried so hard to get back
To where I used to be, like last year, but I did lack
All my leg work, everything I worked hard for
Gone in a second, a second in you, I blamed you for
All that had happened, I was so scared for High School Season
That when I hurt my shoulder, I had a lot of reasons
To quit, just like that, you ruined my last chance
To go to State, to make my parents proud, "I can't"
I kept saying those words, my life turned to hell
Horrible friends, no success, everyone could tell
I wasn't the same, even with a fake smile
Because even after that, you had more turmoil
My grandmother sweet, had Alzheimer disease
I say had, because during the season, she became deceased
How could I try, when there was nothing to try for
Or so did I thought, because my Father touched the core
The core of you, "the year of my life"
So much sadness and pain, I had to force myself to strive
To see the small good that you have given me
And after getting accepted to Auburn, my dream school, I could finally see
There were things to live for, after all that I've been through
Even after a depression scare, some good came into view
I made so many memories with the people I love
And looking to the future, happiness made a shove
Through the darkness you gave to me and my family
I strive for greatness for this last month happily
You've taken so much from me and now hear
My thoughts of great joy for the better next year
You soon will be no more, and how great it will be
To cheer "HAPPY NEW YEAR" from my loved ones and me
With all of my sorrow, and tears and despair
I bury you, 2017, with no ounce of great care
I am better because of you, well not you, but of your acts
Like concrete of evil, my hope slipped through the cracks
I do not want a reply, if you do it will morn
In that low life called past, you will live in forevermore
I bid you farewell, from my future and I
2017, it's been real, but it's time for goodbye
And as I end this letter to you
My sincere apologies to your failed attempt of an evil breakthrough
Goodbye forever, you pathetic thing,
-The new, and improved, 2018 (Me)
