Dear 2017

13 December 2017

Dear 2017,

You were a tsunami, flooding me with the longest wave train ever.

Your first wave was strong but not enough to wipe me away.

You came back strong, a grinding wave.

Grandma got sick, but I was assured that she would recover.

Your next wave left me lost, searching for my home.

You swept away my friends, leaving me alone.

I found my way back to some, allowing my head to fill with joy.

But, I became vulnerable, so you came back stronger than ever.

Your surge taking my best friend away from me,

Splintering my heart, leaving me scared to love,

Crushing my motivation, making me wonder my major,

Rippling my grandma’s strength, letting her fight for her life,

Sweeping away my mom’s job, spawning worry and fear in her eyes.

But I won’t let your waves drown me.

Your damage may be long term but 2018 will be my reconstruction.

I will find myself, bringing me happiness,

I will rebuild my foundation, allowing myself to be brave,

I will conquer my fears, letting love reenter my heart,

I will stay strong because I know now that I cannot let my bad days (or years) dictate how my life will go.

And I want to thank you, 2017, for teaching me these valuable lessons.

But I ask you this, what was it that made you a tsunami?

What disrupted you so much that you wanted to be so destructive?

Sincerely,

M.F.

P.S. I hope peace finds you during your last few days
