Dear Brother

Dear Brother,

I love you, but that doesn’t change the fact

That a secret girlfriend you met online

Will now be your poor unfortunate wife

A child the bond between you and your bride.

A young child of eighteen, is by no means

An adult ready to take on the world.

To make matters worse you’ve done it again

Shoved me headfirst into the frying pan.

Here I will burn with the secret I keep

My words I swallow down into the deep.

Your decision that our father can’t know

Tears my soul into thin threads I can’t sew.

He should know he’ll have a daughter-in-law.

He deserves to know he’ll be a grandpa.

I simply cannot keep this big secret.

This large bag heavy with rocks strapped onto

My aching back is dragging me down to

The painful deep darkness I once escaped.

I’m begging you now, with puppy-dog eyes

To please stop involving me in your lie.

Tell him! It’s really not that hard to say

Just set me free before your wedding day.

I love you regardless little brother,

But please set things right with our poor father.

Love always,

                    Your Favorite Older Sister
